Course Description and Overview
The course uses simulation to help build awarness of the relationship between
operational decisions and market outcomes, and build strategic thinking skills.
The course involves participation in the
International Collegiate Business Strategy Competition
Students work in teams making resource allocation decisions for a virtual firm over 20 quarters.
They will compete with traemtemas from other universities in the US and abroad.
CourseLearning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

- Production and Operations Management
- Finance
- Accounting
- Demonstrate an ability to successfully manage the tradef-offs between a businesses different functional areas
- Demonstrate an ability to use analyse marketing data for multivariate trends
- Develop an accurate forcasting model
- Develop an effective cometitive strategy
- Play an effective role as a member of a team

Course Requirements and Assignments
Aside from the analysis required to make the 20 quarterly decisions, there are
two pieces of documentation that must be developed.
Business Plan
The business plan is written in Year 3 (February) and must be emailed as a PDF to the competition
adminstrators by March 6th.
Annual Report
The annual report must be completed by April 20th. Teams must bring
5 printed copies to the intensive phase in Anaheim.
These two documents are evaluated by the competition judges and placement
in this aspect of the competition constitutes part of the course grade.
SJSU classes are designed such that in order to be successful, it is
expected that students will spend a minimum of forty-five hours for each unit of credit (normally three hours per unit per week), including preparing for class, participating in course activities, completing assignments, and so on. The scheduled course contact hours are in compliance with the required

NOTE that University policy F69-24 at
states that “Students should attend all meetings of their classes, not only because they are responsible for material discussed therein, but because active participation is frequently essential to insure maximum benefit for all members of the class. Attendance per se shall not be used as a criterion for grading.”
Grading
This is a "credit/no credit" course. No letter grades are assigned or reported.

Consent for Recording of Class and Public Sharing of Instructor Material
University Policy S12-7,
http://www.sjsu.edu/senate/docs/S12-7.pdf, requires students to obtain instructor’s permission to record the course and the following items to be included in the syllabus:

“Common courtesy and professional behavior dictate that you notify someone when you are recording him/her. You must obtain the instructor’s permission to make audio or video recordings in this class. Such permission allows the recordings to be used for your private, study purposes only. The recordings are the intellectual property of the instructor; you have not been given any rights to reproduce or distribute the material.”
- It is suggested that the greensheet include the instructor’s process for granting permission, whether in writing or orally and whether for the whole semester or on a class by class basis.
- In classes where active participation of students or guests may be on the recording, permission of those students or guests should be obtained as well.
- “Course material developed by the instructor is the intellectual property of the instructor and cannot be shared publicly without his/her approval. You may not publicly share or upload instructor generated material for this course such as exam questions, lecture notes, or homework solutions without instructor consent.”

In addition to offering small group, individual, and drop-in tutoring for a number of undergraduate courses, consultation with mentors is available on a drop-in or by appointment basis. Workshops are offered on a wide variety of topics including preparing for the Writing Skills Test (WST), improving your learning and memory, alleviating procrastination, surviving your first semester at SJSU, and other related topics. A computer lab and study space are also available for student use in Room 600 of Student Services Center (SSC).
Lucas College and Graduate School of Business Policies:
To ensure that every student, current and future, who takes courses in the Boccardo Business Center has the opportunity to experience an environment that is safe, attractive, and otherwise conducive to learning, the College of Business at San José State has established the following policies:
Eating:
Eating and drinking (except water) are prohibited in the Boccardo Business Center. Students with food will be asked to leave the building. Students who disrupt the course by eating and do not leave the building will be referred to the Judicial Affairs Officer of the University.
Cell Phones:
Students will turn their cell phones off or put them on vibrate mode while in class. They will not answer their phones in class. Students whose phones disrupt the course and do not stop when requested by the instructor will be referred to the Judicial Affairs Officer of the University.
Computer Use:
In the classroom, faculty allow students to use computers only for class-related activities. These include activities such as taking notes on the lecture underway, following the lecture on Web-based PowerPoint slides that the instructor has posted, and finding Web sites to which the instructor directs students at the time of the lecture. Students who use their computers for other activities or who abuse the equipment in any way, at a minimum, will be asked to leave the class and will lose participation points for the day, and, at a maximum, will be referred to the Judicial Affairs Officer of the University for disrupting the course. (Such referral can lead to suspension from the University.) Students are urged to report to their instructors computer use that they regard as inappropriate (i.e., used for activities that are not class related).
Academic Honesty:
Faculty will make every reasonable effort to foster honest academic conduct in their courses. They will secure examinations and their answers so that students cannot have prior access to them and proctor examinations to prevent students from copying or exchanging information. They will be on the alert for plagiarism. Faculty will provide additional information, ideally on the green sheet, about other unacceptable procedures in class work and examinations. Students who are caught cheating will be reported to the Judicial Affairs Officer of the University, as prescribed by Academic Senate Policy S04-12.
